Abstract

In this seminar I will explain the work done so far for my doctoral thesis, which focuses on the development of tools to support people with dyslexia using Natural Language Processing (NLP) and adequate layouts.

First, I will motivate the problem presenting some results that estimate the presence of dyslexia in the Web (W4A 2011, ICWSM 2012). Then, I will detail how we used eye tracking, interviews and questionnaires with dyslexic participants to find out which interfaces and NLP strategies are beneficial for dyslexics. These experiments explore different factors regarding the readability and understandability of text. These factors are: (1) the text layout (W4A 2012), (2) its lexical quality (WWW 2012), (3) the inclusion of graphical schemes in addition to the text (PITR 2012), (4) the application of lexical simplification strategies, (5) the use of verbal paraphrases and (6) the presence of highlighted keywords in the text. Finally, I will focus on the applications developed so far based on the results of the previous experiments and the analysis of writing errors made by dyslexics (NLP4ITA 2012). Examples include the game Dyseggxia and an eBook reader for dyslexics (DSAI 2012) developed by Accessible Systems India.
